AV1 Codec Guide

The math, the licensing, and the hardware reality of AV1.

Why AV1 Exists

The video industry was held hostage by the HEVC (H.265) patent pools (MPEG LA, HEVC Advance, Velos Media). The licensing was so fragmented and expensive that browser vendors like Mozilla and Google refused to ship HEVC decoding.

In response, the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia)—comprising Google, Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, and others—built AV1. It is designed to be 30% more efficient than HEVC, and crucially, royalty-free.

Encoding Efficiency vs Complexity

AV1 achieves massive bitrate savings (often yielding identical VMAF scores at 30-40% lower bitrates than HEVC). However, this compression comes at a severe computational cost. Software encoding AV1 using `libaom` or even `SVT-AV1` requires drastically more CPU time than `x264` or `x265`.

MetricH.264 (AVC)H.265 (HEVC)AV1
Bitrate for 1080p (Target VMAF 95)~6.0 Mbps~3.5 Mbps~2.5 Mbps
Encoding Complexity (Relative)1x4x - 6x10x - 20x
Hardware Decode (Global Devices)99.9%~80% (Mobile/TV heavy)~40% (Growing rapidly)

Hardware Decode Adoption

Software decoding AV1 on mobile devices drains the battery rapidly. Therefore, mass adoption relies on hardware decoders (silicon logic blocks dedicated to AV1). As of late 2023, the landscape looks like this:

  • Apple: A17 Pro (iPhone 15 Pro) and M3 chips finally introduced AV1 hardware decoding.
  • Android: Mandated by Google for new Android 14+ devices. Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2+ supports it.
  • GPUs: Nvidia RTX 30/40 series, AMD RX 6000/7000 series, Intel Arc.

Common Mistakes

  • Encoding the whole catalog in AV1 immediately: Due to the encoding cost, you should only encode your top 5% most popular assets into AV1. The bandwidth savings on head-content will pay for the compute. Encoding long-tail content into AV1 is a net financial loss.
  • Ignoring the fallback: You cannot ship AV1 alone. Your manifest must contain H.264 or HEVC fallback renditions for older devices that will choke trying to software-decode AV1.

FAQ

Will Apple support AV1 fully?

Yes. Apple joined AOMedia years ago, and with the A17/M3 hardware decoders, they have committed to the ecosystem. Support in Safari and AVFoundation is actively rolling out.

What is SVT-AV1?

Scalable Video Technology for AV1 (SVT-AV1) is an open-source encoder developed by Intel and Netflix. It is heavily optimized for modern multi-core x86 CPUs and is currently the fastest way to software-encode AV1 in production.
